Got Air?

The folks at Car and Driver have a cool write up in their November issue :

How to Throw a Subaru Impreza WRX STI into the Atmosphere
The physics behind rally driver Ken Block’s jumps.

The write up looks into the evolution of car jumping and the adaptation of the same basic physics formulas used to plot the trajectory of cannon balls, arrows, and more recently, snowboarders.

Dropping the Science looks like this:

Where:
Vt is velocity of the “projectile” leaving the ramp in ft/sec
Vv is the vertical component of this velocity (Vv = sin A (Vt))
Vh is the horizontal velocity (Vh = cos A (Vt))
A is the jump angle
X is horizontal distance traveled
Y is vertical distance
G is the good ol gravitational constant of 32.17 feet per second second²

Now we fully recommend you try this at home.  Send your questions and emails to Ken Block...

Spy Video of the 2011 Impreza Coupe!!!

Ok kiddies.  For those of you who haven't heard, Subaru is redesigning the Impreza and WRX for 2011 and yes, the coupe is back.

The platform is being co-developed by Toyota and you can find photos of their consept car version floating around the web.  What's important is that our version is to be all Subaru with an in house boxer 4.  There is some talk of a RWD model in addition to our standard symetrical all-wheel drive.  Now for the juicy bits...

The good peoples at ft86club dugg up this spy video of the new Scooby, heavily disguised, tooling around the Nurburgring!  Man we wish we were these guys right about now.

B4 Legacy Super GT at Tokyo Autoshow

Jalopnik ran a nice little piece on the B4 GT car based (loosely) on the new 2010 Legacy.

Basically its 15.5 feet long, 6.25 feet wide, and 3.9 feet tall.
It's powered by a 2.0l 4cyl DOHC turbo similar to what is found our WRC offerings.
Like the WRC Subaru it uses a propane jet to spool the turbo off boost (comming soon to our parts dept)!
The transmission is a 6 speed sequential, the suspension is double wish-bone and AWD is standard.

See the full spred at Jalopnik.com

...and here's a few minutes of this monster in the flesh.  No you can not come in for a test drive.

Latest news on the LeMons race car

The guys on the ABJ team have been hard at work.  They hope to have the car ready in time to shake out bugs at the upcomming track day at Limerock Park on the 18th of June.  Check out their progress to date here...

SCCA regional at Limerock

We had time to crew for Kip Moncrief and his new ITB entry at last weekend's SCCA regional meet.  The location was Limerock part in northwestern Connecticut.  The 2 day event started gray and wet but the rain pulled out and as the track dried.  Rain tires came off and slicks were the order of the day.  The atmosphere was laid back.  Everyone got a good helping of track time on a classic track and the cookout at days' end went down with Yuengling and Coors.  We were very impressed with the guys from Flatout Motorsports.  This west MA local company specializes in track ready Miata rentals with full track side race support.  Cool people.  Most of all it was just great to be on the track.  We love this place.

We're coming back for a Club half day on June 18th.
Join us and take some hot laps in your own car!

Mt. Ascutney Hillclimb

Matt K. and Josh made their way to the Mt.  Ascutney Hillclimb to support one of DSG's owners.  It was the first event for Alex's EVO II with a large helping of antilag.  For a refresher on antilag look HERE.  The car is currently making well over 250hp per liter.  For those of us that don't understand the metric system, put 250hp in a small bottle of soda.

Matt and Josh managed to run their own rally on the way up.  They strung together a path of fire roads on GPS and tore it up in a scoobie turbo.   Along the way they ran across an abandoned hydro plant.   Crossing the finish line at Ascutney,  they fouind the Evo on Jacks in a makeshift roadside pit at the base of the mountain.  The car went off course in an early run destroying the left rear wheel.  As the cars came down the mountain in prep for the second and final run, our duo made it just in time for an emergency wheel change with a very generous second Evo owner.  With only minutes to complete before Alex would miss his window, both cars were in the air side by side.  The damaged wheels would not fit the newer Evo so they became jackstands (see photo).

Alex made the run on barrowed street tires and managed T.O.D (the fastest time of the day).  Way to go Alex!

Check out the photos of the event and the Trip up after the jump...

More Great Press for the 09 WRX

We found this in last Sunday's Republican.  What a nice way to start the day!

You can see the full article by G. Chambers Williams III  online here:

http://www.mysanantonio.com/business/WRX_offers_driving_excitement.html

"The newest generation of this performance-oriented version of Subaru's compact sedan arrived for 2008, offering a level of excitement somewhat above that of the entry-level Impreza model that competes against cars such as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.  With its turbocharged, 224-horsepower, 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder engine, the 2008 WRX offered a serious upgrade to the 170-horsepower normally aspirated boxer under the hood of the base Impreza.  But for 2009, Subaru decided 224 horsepower just wasn't enough for the WRX, and cranked it up to 265 — an 18 percent jump. Torque output was increased as well, to 244 foot-pounds from last year's 226."

"The WRX engine reaches full horsepower at 6,000 rpm and peak torque at 4,000 rpm. And even with the big boost in power, EPA ratings are nearly the same as last year's — 18 miles per gallon city/25 highway versus 19/24 for the '08 model.  This additional power is largely the result of an increase in the boost from the turbocharger to 13.3 psi from the previous model's 11.4, along with the use of a larger-diameter exhaust system with reduced back pressure.  What was already pretty cool for an otherwise average-seeming compact sedan now has become quite impressive. Couple that with the tight five-speed manual gearbox — the only transmission offered on the WRX — and you have the recipe for lots of fun.

Redstock

When we went to pick up our 08 Sleeper car from the Dyno facility, we used the trip as an excuse to get a baseline at the wheels for the new revised 09.  While it was on the rollers we couldn't help but play with it a bit.  Check out the before and after on the dyno chart...

Project 42

We've been just about awful at updating our site lately.  Here's something fresh for all y'all at home.

Project 42
This project has a special place in our hearts.  This is the 42nd job we've taken on in our Performance Division.  It is also our main racing number.  We put a little extra into this one.  Don't let the outside fool you.  This car is not your monther's 08 WRX

Details and more shiny pics after the jump...
